There are applications that cannot extract metadata directly from the image file (e.g. Synology Photos is not able to extract metadata such as rating from the HEIC format). The optional saving of metadata in a sidecar file next to the image would be beneficial.

You can easily save the updated metadata to create or update the sidecar metadata files in the same directory as the original RAW files. This can be achieved by using the 'Save Metadata to Files' button on the magi-cull panel or selecting the 'Save Metadata to All Files' option from the Metadata menu. This approach eliminates the need to export the photos to a different location and avoids creating unnecessary copies of the RAW images. Simply re-sync the metadata in your editing app to see the updated ratings.
Currently, there is no way to export only these updated sidecar metadata files to another location. I hope this addresses your query.
